In the winter of 1944, snow, rain, fog and floods all combined to hinder the Allied advance into Germany. On 8 December, General George Patton, Third US Army commander, called the Third Army chaplain on the phone. "I'm tired of having to fight mud and floods as well as Germans," he said. "See if we can't get God to work on our side."
So Chaplain James O'Neill sat down and wrote a prayer beseeching the Almighty to "grant us fair weather for battle". Patton liked the prayer and ordered O'Neill to print 250,000 copies for distribution to the entire Third Army. "Chaplain, I am a strong believer in prayer," he said.
On 22 December, soon after the soldiers had received the prayer cards, the weeks-long cloud cover disappeared. Six days of perfect weather followed, during which the Third Army inflicted a crushing defeat on the Germans.
