The first outbreak of violence in the American Congress took place in 1798. On 30 January that year, Connecticut representative Roger Griswold got upset when Vermont's Matthew Lyon spoke slightingly of Griswold's home state. He retaliated by calling Lyon a coward. So, to show that he was no coward, Lyon spat at Griswold's face.
On 15 February, after the vote to have Lyon tossed out failed, Griswold took matters into his own hands. He walked up behind Lyon and began beating him with a cane. Lyon, protecting his head and face as well as he could, retreated to the fireplace, took up the fire tongs, and flailed back. It took some time for the other House members to separate the two.
